Big Bear is Back!
Posted by blogbike on May 24th 2013
Remember the good old days when NORBA’s National Championships in Mountain Biking were held at Big Bear, California?
The days when you constantly ran into folks like Missy Giove, Shaun Palmer, Steve Peat, Brian Lopes, April Lawyer, Myles Rockwell, Leigh Donovan, Marla Streb? Those days are long gone and due to several accidents in 2005, Snow Summit closed the park to big bikes. This was the end of an era for mountain bike down-hilling, dual slalom and cross country racing in the greater Los Angeles area. The sport suffered badly and it took years to recover. Eventually with newly reformed rules, new events were held in far away places such as Mammoth, North Star or & Whistler.
Some smaller but well known companies such as Foes Racing in Pasadena California, felt the decline of downhill mountain biking more than the big companies who just focused on other areas of the sport. It was only due to Southridge Races in Fontana that the sport survived in Southern California. Many thanks to Southridge Races! But it was never the same. The gap was not closed and mountain bikers in Southern California felt left out seeing what was possible in other parts of California or in other States.
Now the wait is over!
Gravity Logic, the company who build the mountain bike park in Whistler Colorado decided to take the plunge and build a new bike park in Snow Summit.
Finally May 25th the wait is over and Big Bear Snow Summit Adventure Park will open its doors. We can’t wait to ride those great trails again! Hope to see you there. Stay tuned, pictures will follow soon...
