A fixie is not only a style of bicycle - it started a world wide trend and culture. This trend put people on bikes that were not thinking about riding a bicycle before. A fixie is a single speed road bike, mostly with a flip-flop hub, that can be adjusted to either regular single speed use or "fixed gear" mode, which does not allow the rider to coast, but to keep on pedaling. This riding style was invented in the 1920's in Europe and was merely used in the setting of racing inside a velodrome.
Bike messengers in NYC and LA brought the fixed gear bikes onto the streets to safe costs because it allowed them to go faster without having to keep the bike tuned and the gears adjusted all the time. It also provided a high amount of street credibility among the messengers with a high "cool factor". When Jonas Landford, famous downtown LA messenger and member of Bike Attack's first downhill mountain bike team, first showed up with his fixed gear bike in 2003, people were looking at his bike and said: "What is this?" 2 years later the trend was booming and young people form all over the world were buying and customizing fixed gear bikes. In the meantime the trend waned and became a huge mainstream movement allowing people of all ages to ride a fixed gear bike (mostly in regular single speed mode).
