Starting Cycling at Age 50 and Up
Apr 13th 2018
Most children attempt to ride a bike. Sometimes it takes and they're a cyclist for life. Oftentimes, children don't pursue it and it becomes years, even decades before they try hopping on a bike again. The great thing about cycling though, is that you can pick it up at almost any age.
Everyone is supposed to exercise regularly, it's usually recommended so they can improve their health and fitness. People who are middle aged and older, however, are encouraged to exercise regularly to maintain a healthy body. Otherwise, the body quickly goes into decline and simple physical activities become burdensome.
Cycling is one of the easiest and most convenient forms of aerobic exercise that can start at almost any stage of life. Here are some guidelines to starting cycling at age 50 and up.
Find the right type of bike
You're not going to want a BMX dirt bike if you're just starting to cycle. Shopping at your local bike store (ahem BIKE ATTACK PLAYA VISTA, CA) gives you the freedom to browse different types of bicycles, different fits, and test rides.
These are for people who want to get from point A to point B at a leisurely pace, to enjoy the sights and being active outside. If you are starting out and want something simple, easy and fun, this is our recommendation. They come in a range of styles.
These are commuter bikes. They're built for daily use and come in different speeds- 3 speed, 5 speed, and 7 speed are the most common. The tires are made for city streets and you'll definitely get your mileage's worth on a city bike.
Now these are bikes that are purpose built and there's so many variations! You can get a tricycle with baskets to hold your shopping, tandem bikes, cargo bikes, so much variation, we highly suggest you check out our selection. These bikes are not built for speed, rather they are built with baskets or racks to carry your kids/pets/grandkids, your groceries, whatever you want!

Last and most certainly the best, e-bikes. Ebikes are great for those starting to cycle at a later age because much of the work is done with the motor on the bike. You still are cycling, however it's not as difficult to conquer hills and long distances. This is almost the perfect type of bicycle if you're wanting to cycle, but need a little boost.
